{ back in berlin }

Dear Friends & Family,

Remember how I told you we had a mild winter with very little snow? Well this morning we woke up to this:

Seriously, Berlin?! This is how you welcome us home? With snow? Rain I expected, but snow?! I mean, I was planning on staying home anyways to unpack and settle back in after being away for the weekend, but come on!
I am happy that the weather in Edinburgh wasn't like this. We took over 300 photos, and I am looking forward going through them and writing about our trip. Hopefully I'll have something by the end of the week. Until then, I am going to pout over this cold weather and dream of the day when I'll be running around outside in shorts and a t-shirt. I'll even settle for pants and long sleeve if I don't have to wear a jacket anymore!

{ plans for the summer }

Dear Friends & Family,

Tomorrow John & I are leaving for a long weekend to Edinburgh, Scotland. Randy is also leaving to go back to the US. He was here for a month, and it was so nice to have him. He's an honorary Berliner getting to know so much of our city, speaking the language much better than me or John, acting as a tour guide to his friends that come to see the city he loves so much, and hanging out with all our friends.

I'm not sure if everyone knows this, but John and I will be staying in Berlin at least until the end of summer. So if you have been thinking of visiting us, NOW would be a good time.

I have plans to be outside more. I want to ride bikes everywhere. I want to hang out by the lake. I want to have picnics in the park and drink beers by the canal. I want to go on adventures looking for the best ice cream (Hokey Pokey is still in the lead). I want to stay up until the sun comes up (it won't be difficult in the summer when the sun rises at 4am). There will be more dance parties, there will be more lounging by the pool at Badeschiff, and it will all be done with our friends. And of course I plan to capture all of it with our camera.

Today's adventure was focused on coffee & ice cream, but I can't wait for warmer and longer days to come.

{ farmer's market }

Dear Friends & Family,

Some of you may remember John and I talking about the farmer's market in our neighborhood just a few blocks from our home. We used to go every Saturday to pick up some fresh vegetables and eggs for the weekend.

I'm not a huge fan of the market though. As lovely as the stands are and the large selection of fruits, vegetables, and produce, I am content finding fresh ingredients at the four grocery stores in our neighborhood, two of them being organic stores and the others also having organic options. So I save myself from the large crowds on Saturdays. It's also really convenient that there is a grocery store right on our block. I don't even have to cross any streets to get to it.

Today we went to get flammkuchen (also known as tarte flambé), and I wanted to take some photos to share with you.

So here you go, and enjoy!

{ hello sun }

Dear Friends & Family,

To those in LA this may not sound like a big deal, what with the heat wave and what not, but yesterday I actually spent the day not wearing a jacket! It was in the 60s (that's like 15C or something), and I didn't want to waste a nice day inside, so Amalie and I planned on meeting for lunch and coffee. Instead of taking the train, I walked the 30 minutes to Bergmankiez (a cute little neighborhood in Kreuzberg). Amalie and I have walked and rode our bikes to get lunch at Cocoro and coffee at Chapter One many times last year when the weather was nice, or when it was too hot to take the train anywhere.

Unfortunately it wasn't warm enough to sit outside as both places were in the shade, but we're definitely already making plans for warmer days. We walked back together and went through Viktoriapark where the grass was littered with people sitting hanging out. It's not quite spring yet as the trees are still bare, but it's close. And I'm going to keep taking pictures, and I'm going to keep writing about the weather....until next week when we go to Edinburgh! Then I'll write about that.

{ sundays are for friends }

Dear Friends & Family,

There's not much to do on Sundays except hang out at coffee shops or walk around the flea markets. And that's exactly what we did with our friends. It was cold today, so we were in no rush to leave our corner inside a very packed Silo (name of the coffee shop in case that sentence sounded bizarre).

I'm not quite sure when spring will actually get here. Last Sunday we were all sitting on the stoop of Carly's backyard worried about sunburn and bad tanlines as we soaked in the warm sun. Today and the past couple of days it's been cold, misty, and windy. I didn't feel bad being sick staying in bed knowing it was cold and miserable outside. This week it's supposed to warm up again, and the sun should be making another appearance. I have so many plans once it's warmer out. This will most likely, potentially, possibly, maybe be our last spring and summer living in Berlin (due to the wonderful friends I have made here, I have to speak in a form of denial like saying, "if/when we leave Berlin...").  This city is meant to be spent outside, and I look forward to drinking beers by the canal, sitting outside at restaurants, riding bikes with friends, and not having to wear so many damn layers and heavy jackets.

Last Sunday vs. Today
